Tino is an augmented reality app developed by TIM for the art project “The nights of Tino from Bagdad” by ConiglioViola. It allows you to take part to an interactive trasure hunt to discover and put togheter the fragments of a tale: the story of Tino, a princess of Bagdad and poetess.

“The nights of Tino from Bagdad” is a new video art work by ConiglioViola which transforms the city into a widespread cinema, thanks to Augmented Reality technology. An experiment in interactive storytelling that embraces literature, visual arts, architecture, new media, and film, intended to redraw the map of the city’s space.

Instructions for a wandering spectator.

1. Discover the map of the augmented reality artworks in town.
2. Frame works and observe the images as they come alive.
3. Rewrite Tino’s story and share your adventures across the city

Loosely based on the novel by the expressionist German poetess Else Lasker-Schüler, The Nights of Tino from Bagdad is an experiment of film narration, based on Augmented reality technology and scattered throughout the city public space.
By using the map found on the app, the wandering spectator is invited to explore the city in search of 30 augmented reality posters. Each of them represents an episod of princess Tino’s life. By using the free App to frame these posters, each episode of the video work will come alive on mobile phone displays, directly overlapping the artworks.
In order to assemble Tino’s story, the wandering spectator must cross those places in Turin where the posters are found, unite them in any order, and thus create as many stories as there are itineraries. At the end of this tour anyone can rewrite the plot on the project’s web site, thus becoming a player and co-author.

Tino app has been developed by JOL Mobilab, one of the Joint Open Labs between Telecom Italia and Politechnic of Turin. This is an important example of open innovation. This app uses Artes platform developed by Telecom Italia’s Strategy & Innovation researchers, allowing the creation of augmented reality apps in a very easy and fast way with a web interface for content provisioning.
